Through his work, Chagall left a precious testimony of his time. He lived through the entire twentieth century, a revolution, two world wars and exile. He addressed these many experiences in his art via certain recurring key themes: his hometown, Jewish traditions, the Bible, the couple, the family and the circus. Through about a hundred works, this exhibition highlights the uniqueness with which Chagall presents war and peace.

Take a leisurely walk - in mid-air. Starting behind the Bastille Opera House, this former railway line is now planted with an array of flowers and bushes to give the impression of strolling through hanging gardens. Construction of Notre-Dame, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture, began in the 12th century and finished 200 years later. As you visit the towers and the famous bell that overlooks the Île de la Cité, follow in the footsteps of Victor Hugo’s characters, including his famous Hunchback. From the top of the south tower, under the watchful eyes of the gargoyles, enjoy an unparalleled view of modern Paris.

Unmissable with its 108 feet (33 metre) high tiled minaret, the Mosquée was inaugurated in 1926 to honour the North African countries which had supported France during the First World War. Now Mosque visitors can take a short guided tour of the building and gardens. Other attractions include the hammams or Turkish baths (with separate opening times for men and women) and the popular restaurant, which serves a daily menu of tagines and couscous. Tuck yourself away in the simply planted but cosy courtyard for a refreshing mint tea with sweet pastries.

Looming regally at the top of the magnificent Champs-Elysées is the Arc de Triomphe, built in honour of those who fought and died for France during the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. On the orders of Napoleon I construction began in 1806 and was completed in 1836, during the reign of Louis-Philippe. At the heart of this Paris icon lies the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Decorated with friezes and carrying the names of France’s great historical figures, the Arch de Triomphe offers the most beautiful views of the Champs-Elysées and Paris from its terrace 165 feet (50 metres) above the traffic.
